The Black Artist in America: An Index to Reproduction

Work by black artists has existed in America since the colonial period, but information on it is hard to come by. This is a comprehensive reference tool designed to aid the user in identifying African-American artists and in locating reproductions of their work that have been published in books, magazines, and exhibition catalogs, ranging in time from Joshua Johnston in the colonial period to Romare Bearden, Betye Saar, Richard Hunt, and Faith Ringgold in the present. Entries include personal information for the artists, all identified published reproductions, type of art, date, museum holding, and place of publication.
