Pharmacology is the chemical control of physiology and it is unique in that it incorporates data and techniques from across multiple physiological and chemical sciences. Pharmacologists have historically, and still today, work with systems they do not fully understand; thus, the discipline has evolved procedures to determine activity parameters for drugs that can be used to predict therapeutic utility. This is essential, as drugs are almost never tested and developed in the actual therapeutic system, but rather in test systems from which parameters must be determined to predict activity in systems of varying ambient physiology. As different technologies rapidly evolve there is an ever-increasing level of knowledge about the pharmacology of known drugs, along with increasing capability to utilize pharmacological systems to predict new drug activity. Comprehensive Pharmacology will be a wide-ranging resource, providing the most contemporary and authoritative compendium of knowledge available to the scientific community on the pharmacology of all therapeutic applications of drugs, their mechanism of action and their therapeutic value, with discussion of currently unmet therapeutic needs and strategies to meet those needs. The content of Comprehensive Pharmacology will be organized by drug class and general topics under ‘Principles’, offering a broad audience of readers an in-depth and easily accessible reference work covering every aspect of pharmacological research.
