This book deals with a much understudied and poorly understood aspect of business:  the role of owners and boards in value creation, and its opposite, value destruction.  While there is abundant guidance on value creation for publicly listed firms and their managers, what has been overlooked is the role played by owners, in collaboration with their corporate directors, in value creation and governance. This book addresses that gap. This book offers practical advice centered on the mastery of the 'WHAT, HOW, WHOM of ownership. The book has three parts each describing one of the three legs of this effectiveness tripod:·         The first part deals with the structural elements that owners have to deal with and which we refer to as the "WHAT." This is the Mission, including key values and governance rules as crafted by owners. Two frameworks are presented that pertain to the implementation of the Mission:  the "MGSF" framework concerning the critical alignment of Goals, Strategy, and the Fundamentals of the enterprise with its Mission. The second is the "Three Boards" framework that is the main structure on which the governance of privately owned firms rests.  ·        The second part addresses the relational elements that allow owners must master to effectively manage the social and emotional dynamics in their enterprise. It deals with the "HOW" of ownership, namely the "Process" of leadership that lies at the heart of board work. Fair Process Leadership is presented as a key capability owners and boards must master to realize their value creating aims. ·        Thirdly, the book explores the histories, defining experiences, memories, and talents that define owners.  It concerns the "WHOM," namely the identities of owners. It explores the different styles and patterns of leadership defining owners, as well as the critical transitions owners make in their leadership quest and that act as defining milestones on their personal developmental road.  Ideal reading for business owners, directors and executives of firms with identifiable owners (particularly entrepreneurial, family and also state-owned and private equity firms), this book offers a practical guide for anyone wishing to get to grips with value creation in owner-led contexts.
