During the winter of 1777, Reuben Law strapped on snowshoes and walked from Massachusetts into the wilderness of New Hampshire, pulling a sled with all his worldly possessions. He was the first of many settlers to arrive at a 'slip' of land that didn't have a name of its own until years later. The men and women who made a home in what was to become the Town of Sharon were rugged, noble, practical, compassionate, and smart. The people living there now still are.

This engaging, elegant book tells the story of an overlooked but extraordinary community and offers a glimpse into the lives of some of its citizens, its culture, and the milestones that shaped it. Well-researched, the book is beautifully illustrated with historic and contemporary photographs, paintings, and drawings. Topics include the indigenous inhabitants, women's lives, disasters, health and illness, mills, schools, natural areas, governance, artists, and tradespeople, and much more.

The Lost Village takes its title from the headline of a 1920s newspaper article about Sharon, New Hampshire when it was inhabited by just over twenty people. While Sharon remains one of those very small New England towns that might be passed by, it is a lovely and interesting place that is most definitely not lost.
