Set against the brutal backdrop of the 16th-century Mediterranean, the story follows Julian, the sheltered son of an Italian scholar. Julian's journey is one of extreme physical degradation and spiritual ascent. Stripped of his name, his status, and his freedom, he is subjected to the unimaginable horrors of enslavement.
