The development of specific polymer systems that can be used in a range of applications not normally associated with polymers has been one of the major successes of the modern polymer industry. Meeting the need for an introductory text covering the main groups of specialist polymers, the first edition of this book was widely read by professionals and students working in both polymer science and technology, and materials science and engineering. §Since the first edition was published there have been significant advances in some areas, whilst others have declined in importance. In a thorough overhaul of the first edition, the chapters have been updated to include the latest information, and two new chapters, covering liquid crystal polymers and structural polymers, have been added. The resulting coverage will ensure the book remains a key resource for all those working with, or perhaps encountering for the first time, this important and diverse range of polymeric materials.
