Liam Little knew the sound of every airplane that crossed the China Lake sky.

He knew the jets by their engines before they cleared the mountains. He knew the difference between an F/A-18 and a Growler variant from the way they moved. He had seventeen diecast model airplanes on his shelf, a cardboard airplane in his side yard, and a leather helmet that smelled like oil and something he could never quite name.

Now Liam is going to France. Not the France of postcards and guidebooks. The real one. April 1917. Muddy airfields and canvas hangars and pilots who wrap scarves around their necks and climb into wood-and-fabric biplanes and go up anyway.

Above the Western Front, the sky belongs to one man.

His airplane is red. His name is Manfred von Richthofen. And he has never lost.
