Fondé en 1801, installé dans les bâtiments actuels depuis 1900, le Musée d'arts est depuis son origine une institution culturelle majeure de Nantes. Il fallait donc à cette institution un renouveau à la hauteur de son importance. En 2009, l'agence Stanton Williams a remporté un concours international pour la transformation et l'extension du Musée d'arts de Nantes ainsi que la conception de la muséographie pour l'ensemble des bâtiments qui forment le nouveau musée.
