The containment of HIV is arguably one of the greatest medical and public health challenges of our time. Those affected (in Western countries) have access to highly effective treatment. The downside is that there has not yet been a scientific breakthrough in terms of a cure or vaccine, meaning that animals are used as model organisms for these purposes, amongst others. One specific type of laboratory animal is the 'humanised mouse', which will be examined here from both a scientific and an animal welfare perspective. The focus is on what is feasible in terms of genetic engineering and animal experimentation, on the biomedical relevance of this research practice, and ultimately on the question of its ethical justifiability.
