The steady rise of power cost in combination with regulatory initiatives and government policies that aim to address social responsibility, are driving the academia and industry towards energy efficient solutions for ICT (Information and Communication Technologies). In addition, the demand for ubiquitous coverage and higher speed networking causes continuous enhancements in network infrastructure, while the increasing traffic volumes and flat rate business/charging models are causing network operators difficulties to secure profits. Green or energy efficient communications is the means to reduce the cost of telecommunication services according to the demand of use, helping also network operators to be environmental friendly.The potential to conserve energy in all system aspects and parts of a telecommunication network is the focus of this book, which aims to introduce in a tutorial style the general concepts and practices of energy efficient and green communications. The fundamental principles and concepts are overviewed and categorized before particular examples demonstrate their applicability on specific segments of a telecommunication network.
