Franco's Bastard looks at nationalism/terrorism; Lola Brecht at the situation in the Balkans; The Fourth World at the death squads of Colombia; Low People at the lives of working people living in poverty; The Man who Gave His Foot For Love at imperialism in the third world. The plays travel the world in search of answers to questions like: how can justice be less than absolute? What makes us settle for less than the least we should expect? Why do we oppress when we advocate freedom? Why, when we are vulnerable, do we exploit the vulnerability of others? Why is liberal democracy so often not liberal or democratic? The plays deal with their subjects often with a humour that tests audiences questions what we regard as the truth. They are based on the author's belief that theatre is not simply a place of entertainment but a vital and radical forum for the debating of issues necessary to the health of democracy.
