Larry Whitton is a depressed social worker, trapped in a miserable job at a nursing home and failing as a husband and father. His life is defined by childhood trauma: his brother drowned, and his father abandoned the family.

Guided by Philip, an enigmatic client who can mysteriously communicate with the incapacitated Bill, Larry forms an unorthodox therapy team.
