Research in the ecological and related sciences of botany, zoology, wildlife management and conservation has been revolutionized by technological progress over the last 30 years. Improvements in computing and electronics has improved monitoring of the environment and of wild living species. Entirely new avenues of research have opened such as Citizen Science.
Digital Ecology can be defined as the use of technology in the ecological and related sciences. It looks at how technology is used in the research and management of wild living species and natural systems. This text provides an introduction to the many new technologies that are available for use by ecologist, and how pre-existing ones have been improved. Topics covered include bio-loggers, Remote Sensing, GIS, and Citizen Science.
Mark David Walker lives in Sheffield, UK. He trained in biology and conservation management. He has been involved in a variety of field research including on Mountain Chamois, bats, Yellow-necked Mice, and European Bison.
