-- What exactly does it mean, 'to stand up in front of God'? To attempt to raise oneself from the human sphere to the divine, or to weave a bond with God. But how? By fulfilling one's religious duties - in other words, by obeying the Law and the commandments. To stand up in front of God means serving Him, this 'service' having no other signification the simple act of service. The task itself is the goal, and what we find in the core is what was already apparent on the outside. So the task is an infinite one. Because human beings can never know if their actions attain their objective, whether or not they reach their goal. All that concerns them is the task in hand: the 'result' and the 'success' of the action eludes human knowledge just as do the essence of God and His name. Leibovitz illustrates those facets of our relation to God that are 'endless' and 'without respite', through the unending service of Yom Kippour.
