1964 was a transitional year in America. The optimism of youth inspired by the vision of President Kennedy was extinguished by his assassination in November 1963. However, as if to confirm that life still belonged to the living, Beatlemania lifted America from the abyss in early 1964. The tears caused by Kennedy's assassination yielded to the screams of teenaged girls infatuated with John, Paul, George, and Ringo.

The transformation of 1964 wasn't limited to popular music. Decisions were made in 1964 that would establish the basis for the war in Vietnam. The first official explanation of President Kennedy's assassination was provided by the Warren Commission in 1964. Landmark Civil Rights legislation was ushered through Congress by President Johnson in 1964.

By the end of 1964, China was a nuclear power, Nikita Khrushcev was ousted by the Soviet Union, and President Johnson was elected in a landslide.

The turmoil associated with the decade of the Sixties began in 1964; the year with no Vice President.
